I am first going to put this out there that I love Historic Fiction – prior to beginning to read for review purposes I’d never really read one, and lately have found myself seeking them out – and for good reason – within Historic Fiction we obtain a glimpse of what the past was like, what it was like to live during a different era and just taste a world like ours but different in so many ways! The wants and desires of the characters within the books are the same to our today – they just have to go about getting those things in a different manner – men and women interacted differently, courted differently and even brought children into the world differently. And those are inherent to the world around them at the time.
For Bea Dot her life of glamour and riches is all a facade she wishes for a simpler life with the company of those who love her – sadly the only real comfort she knows within the walls of her home is in the arms of her maid, California, so when her life takes an awful turn at the hands of her vicious husband she decides to take her cousin up on a “temporary” visit in her home several counties away. For a time her life is at ease, she is at peace despite the Flu raging through the town they are living in – she finds comfort in the simple life of working the general store owned by Will Dunaway, tending house and taking care of her cousin during her pregnancy. That is until the dark cloud that is her husband finds a way to wriggle into her simple life.
This book captured my interest from the start – the characters and world they live in is written so beautifully by the author. She draws you in to the point you feel like you are watching the story like a fly on the wall vs, a reader seeing it all through the pages of her book. I cheered for Bea Dot, prayed for her cousin and hoped that everything would work out in the end. I only wish the story could continue forever, but like all good things they come to an end.

I stopped reading fairly early on. The characters acted in ways that strained credulity. And some of the writing in regards to the African-Americans in the book made me cringe. The author compared the dirt on the heroine's skin to the color of her maid, that's just inexcusable. She also referred to the heroine as the maid's "mistress". I assume her male employer was her "master?" Employer or boss would have been so much less fraught. The author's handling of domestic violence as a plot point was stomach turning. The heroine was beaten to the point of miscarriage and raped so violently that she was in severe internal pain (this within the first several pages). And the dolt of a leading man thought her extreme pain was because she landed on her butt when she fell over a piece of luggage.
Written,Bea Dot, living in fear ,she live with a long-fused stick of dynamite and have no idea when the spark will reach the gunpowder,she tried to remember what she done this time to provoke her husband's ire,he was uglier than the devil.Bea Dot,was disappoint about her cousin,people dying in town,with the Spanish influence,and she only think of herself,she have to much to be thankful,I least her baby we're not beaten out of her,the way mine was, after reading this book,I'm going to have my flue shot,I hate needless,ha,ha,ha, how women enduring humiliation in the hand of their husband's,I remember I was only a kid,I heard a woman cry almost every day,"not one do nothing for her,her husband beat her with no mercy,and they trough that was normal,divorces was a taboo," very serious book with a lot of drama and adventure,Thelma.
Dunaway's Crossing by Nancy Brandon is a novel of the American south, in and around Savannah Georgia, in the aftermath of World War I. In this poignant tale of love and flight from domestic abuse, the author evokes a time and mood unique to the unusual setting. There is plenty to laud about this story. First, it's simply told and an easy read. I was able to sit back and let the story sweep me away without struggling to comprehend or difficult vocabulary. Second, I loved the unique setting. The American south truly is unique and any story that can churn up the feel and mood of the times, truly is a work of art. This book definitely does that. And third, it's a nice story, well paced, richly told, and one that is believable and realistic. Complex characters face numerous challenges both personal and societal. it's not hard to see why this book finalled in a writing contest. A nice easy read with plenty of depth. Lots to enjoy here!
This was not "historical fiction" however it was entertaining fiction. Another reviewer, Tracy2500, I believe pointed out many errors, and frankly I did not notice all of those. I had procrastinated reading this because the title didn't really catch my interest. I did enjoy reading about the town trying to cope with the Spanish flu (amazing how none of the main characters died). Also, I found Netta and Bea Dots characters just - not right. We are talking 30+ years after the end of slavery, at the beginning of the book neither of them knows the first thing about cooking or housekeeping, seeming totally dependent on black housekeepers, and then suddenly Netta is scrubbing cabinets and by the end Bea Dot is an expert cook. Hmm.
I would think they would have had some skill in running a household even at the beginning of the book.
I did like the book, in spite of these criticisms, however I would not seek out this author as a favorite, or probably even buy another book by her.
